TicTacToe Dish Rack

TicTacToe Dish Rack is an interaction design piece created by Cathy Chen and Harjot Bal to demonstrate the gamification of ubiquitous computing to incentivize positive behaviour–specifically, we wanted to create an interaction experience that might be able to get people who share a common workspace to wash dirty dishes. The dish rack features a towel with a grid on it and small LED heads, all of which cover complex circuitry beneath (comprised of a multiplex arrangement of conductive materials and springy foam) running to an Arduino board holding the game code. Indicator LEDs mounted to a wall poster lets players know whose turn it is. See a demo video and design research below.
